Signs To Look For
Here are some of the signs and symptoms of tooth decay that you should be looking out for!
Temperature sensitivity
Are your child’s teeth sensitive to hot or cold foods? One of the first signs of cavities forming can be toothaches when eating hot or cold foods. Cavities begin as small holes in our teeth that can sometimes wear down to the nerve endings in our teeth and gums, causing these negative reactions to extreme temperatures.
Discolored teeth
Watch for small brown or black spots on your child’s teeth. These can oftentimes be cavities!
Bleeding gums
If your child’s gums are bleeding that could be a sign that it is time to see the dentist. Gum disease can go along with tooth decay. If you notice this symptom, make an appointment to see your pediatric dentist.
Irritability
A symptom of tooth decay in young children could be irritability. They might not be able to accurately express what is wrong, but a painful toothache is enough to make anyone irritable.
Bad breath
Bad breath can be a symptom of built up bacteria in the mouth. This is a warning sign of tooth decay!
Preventing Tooth Decay
The best way to prevent tooth decay in children is to practice good oral hygiene daily. By brushing for two minutes twice a day you can greatly decrease your child’s chance at getting a cavity. Plan on visiting a pediatric dentist at least twice a year for regular checkups.
